Retirement New Homes
Buying a new home with one’s retirement money is an attractive option for a lot of retirees. This is especially the case with baby boomers, the generation that’s now on its retirement age. Baby boomers, those born within 20 years after World War II, are a generation that’s noted for its spending capacity. And with 77 million retired boomers as of 2005 in America alone, their spending power is not something that’s to be overlooked.
But with their spending power comes some of their concerns too. At the top of the list is social security which for most boomers is at its critical level. They are therefore more cautious with how they spend their money.
If you belong to the Baby Boomer generation, chances are that the situations illustrated above for you are true. You wish to build a new home somewhere else but are concerned with how you spend your money. However, armed with the proper information, you can make the most out of your retirement money and enjoy your years of retirement.
Here are some tips that will help you find a new home to retire in:
1. Take into consideration the taxes – if you’re planning to build a home somewhere else, one of the things that you should consider are the taxes that will be involved in having a new house. If you think that you’ll end up paying a lot of money for real estate taxes, you have several options.
First, you can rent the place out at times when you are not living there. This will help offset your costs. Another is that you should build your home where real estate taxes are low. If for example you wish retire to California, find locations away from big cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles because the two have notoriously high real estate taxes.
2. Rent a house instead – if you only plan to live in your second home for three months or less every year, then it might be practical that you rent a home in the area of your choice instead. Renting cuts your costs a lot especially in the issue of real estate taxes. So even if owning a second home is a tempting prospect, you should temper it with practicality as well.
